      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Combining physical objects with verbal storytelling taps into embodied cognition, making concepts more tangible. As children navigate from a collection of random items to a structured narrative, they engage in cognitive rehearsal, which strengthens memory and fluency.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 5 random objects from around your house (toys, utensils, etc.). 2. Place all the objects in a box. 3. Spend 5 minutes examining the items and brainstorming a story that includes all of them. 4. Create a beginning, middle, and end for your story. 5. Perform your story to your family, using the objects as props. 6. Ask your audience what they enjoyed most about your storytelling.
