What this lesson teaches

This activity sharpens focus and fine motor skills as children learn to control and direct their attention while spinning. By concentrating on the spinner's movement, kids enhance their ability to sustain attention in other tasks too.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Integrating action with focus training employs embodied cognition, allowing children to physically engage with the task while mentally concentrating. The repetitive action of spinning in conjunction with focused observation strengthens neural connections related to attention.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Create a homemade fidget spinner using paper, scissors, and a pencil. 2. Draw a circle on paper and cut it out as the spinner. 3. Poke a hole in the center and insert the pencil to create a spinning axis. 4. Spin the fidget spinner and focus on the number of seconds it spins. 5. Challenge yourself to make it spin longer each time! 6. Share your best spinning time with family and see who can beat it.
