      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Active listening engages multiple senses and sharpens auditory skills. According to Vygotsky's scaffolding theory, working together with a parent enables children to build on their current abilities while being guided through the process of sound discrimination.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather household items that make noise (e.g., bell, whistle, spoon). 2. Close your eyes and have a family member create sounds using these items. 3. Try to identify each sound without peeking. 4. Once identified, open your eyes and find where the sound is coming from. 5. Repeat the activity, switching roles with your family member. 6. Create a sound chart to record which sounds you identified correctly!
