What this lesson teaches

This activity introduces children to fractions by dividing a pizza into equal parts. By physically cutting and sharing, they visualize fractions as parts of a whole, reinforcing how numbers represent portions in real life.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition allows children to grasp abstract concepts like fractions through tactile experiences. Manipulating physical pieces aids memory and understanding, as they associate the act of cutting with the mathematical idea of division.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a sheet of colored paper and draw a large circle (pizza). 2. Cut the circle into 8 equal slices. 3. Label 3 slices as '1/8' and 5 slices as '1/8'. 4. Share slices with family members, discussing the fractions as you do. 5. Create a new pizza with a different number of slices and repeat. 6. Compare which pizza had more slices and what fractions that created.
