    How the activity runs

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using embodied cognition, children connect the abstract idea of fractions to a tangible experience. Cutting and sharing pizzas allows them to visualize and manipulate quantities, making fractions less intimidating and more relatable.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Cut a large piece of paper into a circle to make a pizza. 2. Divide the pizza into 8 equal slices using a ruler. 3. Color and label 3 slices as 'cheese', 2 as 'pepperoni', and 3 as 'veggie'. 4. Share the pizza with family and discuss what fractions each topping represents. 5. If you eat 2 cheese slices, how many are left? Subtract and write it down. 6. Create a new pizza with different toppings and fractions!
