      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition helps children grasp fractions as they manipulate real objects. By engaging with food, a motivating resource, they can see, touch, and taste fractions, making the learning experience memorable and relevant.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 2 different fruits (e.g., watermelon and orange). 2. Wash the fruits and place them on a cutting board. 3. Cut the watermelon into 8 equal slices and the orange into 4 equal slices. 4. Discuss how many slices make up 1 whole fruit for each type. 5. Compare: How many slices of watermelon equal one orange slice? Write down your findings. 6. Share your fruit fractions with family — can they guess the fractions based on the slices?
