      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using food as a model for fractions enhances understanding through embodied cognition. As children slice and share, they physically represent fractions, reinforcing their learning through visual and tactile experiences.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a large round piece of cardboard or a paper plate to represent your pizza. 2. Use a ruler to mark and cut the pizza into 8 equal slices. 3. Choose toppings (like stickers or colored paper) to represent different fractions of the pizza. 4. Share with family members: each person gets a specific fraction of the pizza. 5. Discuss how many slices each person has and what fraction of the whole pizza that represents. 6. Create a new pizza with different fractions and repeat!
