      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using food as a learning tool leverages embodied cognition, allowing children to connect physical actions with mathematical concepts. When they cut and share pizzas, they engage in active problem-solving and collaboration, making the learning process memorable and meaningful.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a round pizza base or a large flatbread. 2. Use a knife to cut it into 8 equal slices. 3. Label each slice with a fraction (1/8, 2/8, etc.) using a marker. 4. Share the slices with family members and explain the fractions as you distribute. 5. Ask each family member to combine their slices and express their total fraction. 6. Reflect on how many slices were eaten and how that changes your pizza fraction!
