What this lesson teaches

This activity uses pizza slices to visually and physically demonstrate fractions. By dividing a whole pizza into parts, children grasp the concept of fractions as 'parts of a whole' and learn to compare them in a tangible way.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition occurs as children manipulate physical pizza slices, making abstract fraction concepts concrete. This hands-on approach allows children to visualize and physically engage with fractions, enhancing retention through active participation.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a round piece of cardboard or paper and cut it into 8 equal slices. 2. Use colored pencils or crayons to decorate each slice like a pizza. 3. Invite family members to take their share — how many slices do you have left? 4. Compare different combinations of slices taken (2/8, 3/8). Which is bigger? 5. Discuss how each slice relates to the whole pizza (1/8, 3/8). Write it down. 6. Share your favorite combination of toppings and discuss how fractions apply to them!
