      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using dual coding theory, children engage both visually and verbally as they draw and label their family members. By actively assembling their family tree, they strengthen memory retention through meaningful connections to their personal history.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take an A3 sheet and draw a large tree with branches. 2. At the trunk, write your name. 3. Add branches for parents, grandparents, and siblings, writing their names on each. 4. Use colored pencils to draw pictures or symbols representing each family member. 5. Decorate the tree with leaves and flowers to show family traits. 6. Share your family tree with Amma and Appa — what did they think?
