      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using a relay format integrates movement with rhyme, engaging multiple senses and capitalizing on embodied cognition. The excitement of racing against time reduces cognitive load, making it easier to recall and articulate words.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 5 simple rhymes or tongue twisters, like 'cat, bat, hat'. 2. Set a timer for 1 minute. 3. Stand in a circle with family members. 4. When the timer starts, say a rhyme and pass a soft ball to the next person. 5. Continue passing and rhyming until the timer stops. 6. Discuss which rhymes were easier and which were harder — why do you think that is?
