What this lesson teaches

This activity introduces mathematical proofs by engaging children in reasoning tasks. By constructing proofs step-by-step, they see logical connections in mathematics come to life, making abstract concepts tangible and relatable.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using Bruner's CPA (Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract) approach, this game allows children to move from physical proof cards to abstract reasoning, scaffolding their understanding at each stage. Playing in a collaborative setting also encourages peer learning and verbal reasoning.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Create 10 cards with simple mathematical statements (like '2 + 2 = 4'). 2. Write proof steps on separate cards (like 'Group 2 and 2 together'). 3. Shuffle and spread all cards face down. 4. Take turns flipping two cards — one statement, one proof step. 5. If they match, explain why — if not, turn them back. 6. Keep going until all pairs are matched — review any mismatches together!
