      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By manipulating materials to form shapes, children engage in embodied cognition, allowing them to physically experience geometry. This hands-on approach helps solidify their grasp of angles and sides, making it easier for them to visualize and remember geometric concepts.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 12 colorful straws or sticks and scissors. 2. Cut the straws into different lengths — at least 4 for each shape you plan to create. 3. Use the straws to form triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons. 4. Count the sides and angles of each polygon. 5. Sketch your shapes on paper, labeling sides and angles. 6. Display your creations and explain their properties to a family member!
