Concept

What this lesson teaches

This activity uses the concept of sharing to illustrate fractional parts. By cutting a pizza into slices, children visualize fractions, reinforcing how they represent parts of a whole in real-life contexts, making it easier to grasp the idea of numerators and denominators.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using tangible objects like paper pizzas enhances cognitive understanding through embodied cognition. As children physically create and divide their pizzas, they solidify their grasp of fractions and develop spatial reasoning, while social interactions during sharing build collaborative skills.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a large sheet of colored paper (preferably brown for crust). 2. Draw a large circle to represent the pizza. 3. Use scissors to cut the pizza into 8 equal slices. 4. Number the slices to represent fractions (1/8, 2/8, etc.). 5. Share your slices with family members, explaining the fraction of pizza each person gets. 6. Create a ‘favorite topping’ chart to show what toppings you’d add to each slice.
