      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using the hands-on method of cutting and sharing emphasizes embodied cognition, where children learn through physical interaction. The visual and tactile elements engage multiple senses, enhancing memory retention and understanding of fractions' practical applications.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Cut a large circle from a piece of cardboard or paper to create a pizza. 2. Use scissors to cut the pizza into 4 equal slices. 3. Label each slice with a fraction (1/4, 2/4, etc.). 4. Ask family members how to share the pizza fairly, using different fractions. 5. Create a second pizza and cut it into 8 slices, repeating the labeling. 6. Compare the slices and discuss which are more or less than a half.
