Using physical objects, like a paper pizza, allows for embodied cognition, making fractions tangible. Experiencing the act of sharing reinforces the concept of equivalence and part-whole relationships through active participation.
1. Take a round piece of cardboard or paper and color it like a pizza. 2. Use scissors to cut the pizza into 4 equal slices. 3. Label each slice with a fraction (1/4). 4. Share one slice with each family member and discuss how much pizza everyone gets. 5. Cut the pizza into 8 slices and repeat the sharing. 6. Compare how many slices each person got in both cases — which fraction is bigger?
