Embodied cognition plays a key role here, as children actively engage in creating and cutting their pizzas. This hands-on experience helps cement the concept of fractions by linking the abstract idea of ‘parts of a whole’ to a physical creation they can manipulate.
1. Take a sheet of colored paper and cut it into a large circle representing the pizza. 2. Decide on 4 toppings and draw them on slices — for example, pepperoni, capsicum, onion, and cheese. 3. Cut the pizza into 8 equal slices. 4. Choose a fraction, like 3/8, and color in that number of slices. 5. Share your pizza fractions with family and explain what each colored part represents. 6. Create a new pizza with different fractions and toppings for fun!
