      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition enhances learning when children manipulate food to visualize fractions. By actually cutting and sharing pizza slices, they see the parts coming together, making the concept of fractions more concrete and memorable.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Prepare or buy a round pizza (or make one with dough). 2. Using a knife, cut the pizza into 8 equal slices. 3. Label each slice with fractions (1/8, 2/8, etc.) using paper or a marker. 4. Share slices with family members and discuss how many pieces each person received. 5. Compare different combinations of slices — what is 3 slices versus 5 slices? 6. Reflect on how many slices make a whole pizza.
