      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition shows that children grasp concepts more effectively when they manipulate physical items. Creating and decoding patterns with beans strengthens neural connections related to spatial reasoning and logic.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 20 colorful beans (or small objects) of 3 different colors. 2. Create a simple pattern using 5 beans (e.g., red, blue, green, red, blue). 3. Ask your child to observe and identify the repeating pattern. 4. Mix up the beans and challenge them to recreate the same pattern. 5. Gradually increase the complexity of your patterns as they succeed. 6. Discuss how many beans were used and how they formed the patterns!
