      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By physically arranging items, children engage in embodied cognition, allowing them to visualize patterns through tactile interaction. This hands-on approach reinforces memory and understanding of sequences, making abstract concepts more concrete.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 10 colored beads or buttons from around the house. 2. Choose 2 colors to create a pattern (like red and blue). 3. Arrange the beads in a line, alternating colors: red, blue, red, blue... 4. Add one more color (green) to create a new pattern: red, blue, green. 5. Challenge a family member to continue your pattern without help. 6. Discuss what makes a pattern recognizable and how many you created!
