      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Debate encourages embodied cognition as children physically express their arguments, improving retention through active participation. By practicing speaking in a structured format, they experience Vygotsky's scaffolding, building confidence incrementally as they receive peer feedback.

      Try it with your learner

      1. Choose a current topic everyone can discuss, like 'Should we have school uniforms?'. 2. Assign roles: one team supports the idea, and the other opposes it. 3. Each team gathers arguments and examples to support their side using pen and paper. 4. Set a timer for 5 minutes to prepare and practice speeches together. 5. Conduct the debate: each team presents their arguments for 3 minutes. 6. Reflect together: What arguments were most convincing and why?
