      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By engaging in hands-on experiments, children apply concepts from nutrition biochemistry directly, enhancing their retention through embodied cognition. The visual and tactile nature of these experiments allows them to make concrete connections between food and its nutritional value.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather materials: bread, oil, sugar, vinegar, water, test tubes/jars. 2. Label the jars: 'Carbohydrates', 'Fats', 'Sugars', 'Acids'. 3. Place a small piece of bread in the 'Carbohydrates' jar and add a few drops of water. 4. In the 'Fats' jar, add a teaspoon of oil and mix. 5. For the 'Sugars' jar, dissolve a spoonful of sugar in water. 6. Observe changes in each jar and discuss with family members what nutrients you think each food contributes.
