The learning connection
Using the Bruner's CPA (Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract) approach, children first engage concretely by building puppets and then pictorially by acting out stories. This hands-on creation leads to an intrinsic understanding of storytelling elements such as plot and characters.
Try it with your learner
1. Take an empty shoe box and turn it on its side. 2. Decorate the box with colored paper to create a stage backdrop. 3. Use old socks or paper to craft at least 3 puppets representing your favorite characters. 4. Write a simple script for your story, detailing character dialogues. 5. Invite family members to watch your puppet show and act out the story. 6. Reflect on how the story changed when characters interacted differently.
