      The learning connection

Using a treasure hunt context makes plotting coordinates engaging and relatable. According to embodied cognition, children learn better when they use their body and movement to explore mathematical concepts.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Draw a large grid on a paper (10x10 squares). 2. Mark your home as the starting point at (0,0). 3. Choose 5 locations for treasures and write their coordinates. 4. Plot each point on the grid and draw an 'X' where each treasure is located. 5. Take turns with a family member to find treasures based on the coordinates. 6. Share the stories of the treasures you found!
