      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Listening closely involves selective attention, allowing the brain to strengthen neural pathways associated with sound recognition. Engaging in focused auditory tasks fosters cognitive development by applying Vygotsky's scaffolding, where children gradually build their listening skills through practice and guidance.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Find two empty plastic cups and a small collection of sound-making objects (keys, coins, bells). 2. With your eyes closed, place the objects in the cups one by one. 3. Ask a family member to shake each cup without showing you what's inside. 4. Listen carefully and guess the object using your ears alone. 5. Take turns with your family member — can they guess your sounds too? 6. Create your own sound treasure hunt by hiding objects and having others find them by listening!
