      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using visual aids and repetition through pairing landmarks with their images taps into dual coding theory, where children encode information through both verbal and visual channels. This multi-faceted approach helps solidify their memory of local heritage.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 10 photos of local landmarks (print or draw them). 2. Make 10 matching cards with the names of the landmarks. 3. Shuffle the cards and lay them face down in a grid. 4. Take turns flipping two cards at a time, trying to match the photo with its name. 5. When a match is found, explain why that landmark is important to your community. 6. Continue until all matches are found — who has the most pairs?
