What this lesson teaches

This activity fosters creativity and resourcefulness by encouraging children to repurpose materials. Children learn to visualize how discarded items can become art, enhancing their problem-solving skills and environmental awareness.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using recycled materials taps into embodied cognition; as children manipulate objects, they connect abstract ideas about waste and reuse to tangible outcomes. This hands-on project embodies Bruner's CPA approach, allowing children to 'enactive' their learning by physically creating.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Collect at least 5 different recyclable items like plastic bottles, cardboard, and caps. 2. Decide which animal you want to create (like a giraffe or elephant). 3. Use scissors to cut shapes from the cardboard for your animal's body parts. 4. Assemble your sculpture using tape or glue, attaching the items creatively. 5. Paint or decorate your sculpture with markers or colored paper. 6. Display your sculpture and share the story behind your animal!
