What this lesson teaches

This activity fosters engineering skills by challenging children to design and build a functional bridge. They learn about structural integrity and weight distribution as they construct and test their designs.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Constructing a bridge engages the principles of embodied cognition, allowing children to physically manipulate materials and visualize their ideas. The iterative process of designing, testing, and refining their bridge promotes problem-solving and critical thinking.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather materials: 10 popsicle sticks, glue, and a small weight (like a book). 2. Design your bridge on paper, ensuring it spans a gap (like between two chairs). 3. Construct your bridge using the popsicle sticks and glue. 4. Let the glue dry for 10 minutes. 5. Once dry, place the small weight on the bridge to test its strength. 6. Reflect on what worked and what didn’t—how could you improve your design?
