      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By using embodied cognition, children connect their breath with a visual and tactile sensation. This activity not only enhances lung capacity but also instills a sense of mindfulness as they focus on expanding and deflating their 'balloon', reinforcing positive breathing habits.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Sit comfortably on the floor, legs crossed. 2. Place your hands on your belly and take a deep breath in, imagining a balloon inflating. 3. Hold your breath for 3 seconds, feeling the balloon grow bigger. 4. Slowly exhale through your mouth, envisioning the balloon deflating. 5. Repeat this process 5 times, increasing the size of your 'balloon' with each breath. 6. Share your experience with Amma or Appa — how did it feel to breathe like a balloon?
