      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Focused breathing engages the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting calmness and concentration. By observing the balloon inflate, children experience embodied cognition as they visually connect breath control with physical change.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a medium-sized balloon and hold it in your hand. 2. Take a deep breath in through your nose. 3. Slowly exhale through your mouth while letting the air fill the balloon. 4. Watch the balloon grow bigger as you breathe out. 5. Repeat 3 times, trying to make the balloon bigger each time. 6. Share how you feel after breathing — are you calmer or more focused?
