      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using Vygotsky's scaffolding theory, children build on existing knowledge as they incorporate new objects into their stories. The physical presence of items also anchors abstract concepts, making the storytelling experience much more vivid and memorable.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a box and fill it with 5 random objects, like a spoon and a toy. 2. Choose a favorite story you know well. 3. Use the objects to modify the story creatively, adding new elements. 4. Practice telling the modified story to a family member. 5. Pay attention to their reactions and adjust your storytelling based on their feedback. 6. Share your new story with the whole family — how did it change?
