      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By physically moving to find items based on coordinates, children engage in embodied cognition. This active exploration solidifies their understanding of coordinates as not just numbers, but as real-world locations, enhancing retention through movement and context.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Draw a simple grid on a sheet of paper, labeling axes 0-5. 2. Choose 5 items to hide around your home and assign each a coordinate (e.g., (2,3)). 3. Write down the coordinates of each item on slips of paper. 4. Give the slips to a family member to hide the items. 5. Use the grid to navigate and find the hidden items by moving to the coordinates. 6. Once discovered, write down the coordinates next to each item for reference.
