      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging children in creating and sharing food visuals taps into embodied cognition. When they physically manipulate the pizza slices, they can better visualize and internalize the concept of fractions, enabling deeper comprehension through active participation.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a sheet of paper and draw a large circle to represent a pizza. 2. Divide the circle into 8 equal slices by drawing lines like a pizza cutter. 3. Color 4 slices red to represent pepperoni and 4 slices green for veggies. 4. Count how many slices you have in total and how many are each topping. 5. Share your pizza with family, explaining the fractions of each topping. 6. Discuss: if you ate 1 slice of pepperoni, how many slices are left?
