What this lesson teaches

By dividing paper pizzas into slices, children grasp the concept of fractions visually and tangibly. This hands-on approach helps them understand how parts make a whole, which is essential for mastering basic fraction skills.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using visual and tactile materials enhances comprehension through embodied cognition. When children physically manipulate pizza slices, they internalize fractions as they see and feel the division of a whole into parts, fostering a deeper understanding.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a piece of paper and draw a large circle for the pizza. 2. Divide the circle into 4 equal slices (quarters) with a pencil. 3. Label each slice (1/4) and color them differently. 4. Now divide the same pizza into 8 equal slices (eighths) and label them. 5. Share your pizza with family and discuss how many slices each person gets. 6. Reflect on how many slices equal a whole pizza — is it 4 pieces or 8 pieces?
