      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition principles show that physical manipulation of objects, like cutting and sharing pizza, deepens understanding of fractions. The hands-on nature of this activity encourages children to visualize parts of a whole, enhancing retention and comprehension of fractional relationships.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 2 sheets of colored paper and scissors. 2. Draw and cut out 2 large circles (pizzas). 3. Divide each pizza into 4 equal slices (cut into quarters). 4. Use one pizza to show 1/4 of it, and the other to show sharing it with 3 friends. 5. Write down the fractions represented on each pizza and compare. 6. Discuss with family how sharing pizza relates to fractions!
