      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using food as a manipulative engages children’s senses and emotions, enhancing learning through embodied cognition. The act of physically dividing pizza into slices reinforces the concept of fractions, making it easier for children to grasp equivalence and addition of fractions in future lessons.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a round pizza (or a flat bread) and a pizza cutter. 2. Decide how many slices you want to make (like 4 or 8). 3. Use the cutter to divide the pizza into the chosen number of equal slices. 4. Count how many slices you made and represent this as a fraction (for example, 1/4 for each slice). 5. Share the slices with family members, discussing how many pieces each person gets. 6. Reflect on how the whole pizza represents 1 and each slice represents a fraction of it.
