This activity teaches children how to visualize fractions using a pizza model. By dividing a pizza into slices, they grasp the concept of parts of a whole, which is fundamental in understanding fractions in math.
Using real-life objects like pizza engages children’s senses and helps them understand fractions through embodied cognition. As they physically cut and share slices, they reinforce the concept of numerator and denominator in a tangible way.
1. Take a round piece of cardboard and color it like a pizza. 2. Divide the pizza into 8 equal slices using a ruler (or visually). 3. Label 1 slice as '1/8' and continue labeling the others up to '8/8'. 4. Share the slices with family members and explain how many slices each person gets. 5. Discuss what happens if you eat a slice — how does it affect the whole? 6. Create a second pizza with different fractions and compare them.
