      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition shows that when children physically create and manipulate pizza slices, they internalize the concept of fractions as parts of a whole. The sensory experience of cutting and sharing engages multiple senses, reinforcing memory and understanding.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather colored paper (red for base, yellow for cheese, toppings). 2. Cut a large circle from the red paper for the pizza base. 3. Cut the circle into 8 equal slices (triangles). 4. Decorate with yellow paper for cheese and colored paper for toppings. 5. Share the slices with family members and explain the fraction of pizza each person gets. 6. Discuss what happens if some slices are eaten — how does that change the fractions?
