By physically creating a model, students engage in embodied cognition, reinforcing their understanding of ecological concepts. Manipulating materials to represent various components fosters spatial awareness and deep learning of environmental science.
1. Gather a clear jar, soil, small plants or grass, pebbles, and water. 2. Add a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the jar for drainage. 3. Add a layer of soil on top of the pebbles, about 5 cm high. 4. Plant small plants or grass in the soil, leaving some space. 5. Lightly water the plants and seal the jar with a lid. 6. Place your jar in a sunny spot and observe the ecosystem changes over a week.
