      The learning connection

Debates engage children cognitively by requiring them to think on their feet and articulate points under time constraints. The principles of Vygotsky's scaffolding apply as children learn from each other’s perspectives, improving their argumentation and speaking skills collaboratively.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Choose a fun topic like 'Cats vs. Dogs'. 2. Set a timer for 2 minutes for each person to prepare arguments. 3. Take turns presenting arguments for your side. 4. After each argument, ask one question to the opponent. 5. Rotate topics and repeat with different family members. 6. Discuss which arguments were most convincing and why.
