This activity fosters empathy by encouraging children to express and visualize emotions. Understanding different feelings helps children build compassion and strengthen relationships with others.
Visualizing emotions through fabric creates a tangible connection to feelings, following dual coding theory. Making a quilt also allows children to engage in shared storytelling, reinforcing Vygotsky's scaffolding as they discuss their feelings with family members.
1. Gather 6 pieces of colored paper (A4 size). 2. On each piece, draw or write a different feeling (happy, sad, excited, etc.). 3. Cut each paper into a square, about 6 inches. 4. Use a thread or glue to stitch or attach the squares together. 5. Share with each other why you chose those feelings and what they mean to you. 6. Display your quilt in your room — how does it make you feel?
