      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging in simulated digs allows children to experience embodied cognition — learning through physical activity. The tactile experience of digging mimics actual archaeological methods, deepening their understanding of historical context and significance.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a small shovel, a tray, and a few old buttons or coins. 2. Bury the buttons or coins in a patch of soil or sand in your yard. 3. Mark the excavation site with a flag or stone. 4. Begin digging carefully with the shovel, observing the soil layers. 5. Retrieve the buried items and clean them with a cloth. 6. Discuss what each item could tell us about the lives of people in the past.
