      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using clues to reveal a mystery number engages children’s cognitive load in a structured way. The challenge of deduction enhances their problem-solving abilities while fostering their confidence in tackling mathematical proofs.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Write down a mystery number between 1 and 50 on a piece of paper. 2. Create 5 clues that lead to this number (e.g., 'It's more than 20, but less than 30'). 3. Share these clues with a family member. 4. Set a timer for 10 minutes for them to guess the number. 5. If they guess correctly, reverse roles! Let them create clues. 6. Discuss which clues were most helpful and why.
