This activity uses the pizza model to teach fractions by dividing a whole into equal parts. Children will understand how fractions represent portions of a whole, making the concept tangible and relatable through food.
Using real-life contexts like food to illustrate fractions engages children's senses and promotes embodied cognition. They physically manipulate pizza slices, reinforcing the understanding of division and fraction size through visual and tactile experiences.
1. Take a round piece of cardboard or paper to represent your pizza. 2. Decorate it with colored paper or markers to create your toppings. 3. Cut the pizza into 4 equal slices to show quarters. 4. Count out how many slices you have and recognize each slice as a fraction of the whole. 5. Next, cut the pizza again into 8 slices for eighths and compare with quarters. 6. Share your pizza and discuss which fractions are larger or smaller with your family.
