      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition helps solidify understanding of fractions, as children see and touch the divisions they create. By engaging in a fun, sensory activity, they retain the concepts better than through abstract representation, while Vygotsky's scaffolding allows parents to guide their understanding as needed.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a paper plate and colorful paper (red for sauce, yellow for cheese, etc.). 2. Cut out 8 triangular slices from the colored paper. 3. Assemble the slices onto the plate to form a pizza. 4. Discuss with your child how to share 1/2 or 1/4 of the pizza. 5. Use a ruler to draw lines on the plate to divide the pizza into different fractions. 6. Share your pizza with family members and describe the fractions you created.
