      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using embodied cognition, children learn to control their breathing while engaging in a fun physical task. As they inflate the balloon, they practice mindfulness, which reduces anxiety and fosters concentration during study sessions.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Grab an uninflated balloon and hold it in your hands. 2. Take a deep breath in through your nose and fill your lungs. 3. Place your lips on the balloon and exhale slowly to inflate it. 4. Continue breathing in deep and exhaling gently until the balloon is full. 5. Feel how your body relaxes with each breath — count how many breaths it takes to fill the balloon! 6. Share your experience with family: How did the breathing feel as the balloon grew?
