      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging in debates activates cognitive load theory by requiring children to organize their thoughts and articulate them clearly under pressure. Scaffolding support from family members during the debate allows children to build confidence and enhance their speaking skills.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Choose a topic everyone cares about, like 'Is online learning better than classroom learning?' 2. Divide into two teams: one for and one against. 3. Spend 5 minutes brainstorming points for your side and writing them down. 4. Take turns presenting your arguments, allowing each side 3 minutes. 5. After both sides present, discuss counterarguments and rebuttals for 3 minutes. 6. Reflect together: what points were strongest, and why did they resonate?
