      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By engaging in rapid-fire debates, children practice verbal reasoning and quick thinking. This aligns with Vygotsky's scaffolding, as they are guided in forming arguments while building on each other's ideas in a supportive environment.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Write down 5 fun topics on pieces of paper (e.g., cats vs. dogs). 2. Fold the papers and place them in a bowl. 3. Set a timer for 3 minutes for each debate. 4. Draw a topic, then take turns defending positions for 3 minutes each. 5. After each round, discuss which arguments were most convincing. 6. Pick a new topic and repeat — how did your arguments improve?
