      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging in debates promotes Vygotsky's scaffolding; as children present their ideas, they receive immediate feedback. The structured format of a debate encourages them to organize their thoughts, leading to enhanced cognitive processing and confidence in public speaking.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Find a shoebox and decorate it with colorful paper and markers. 2. Write down 5 fun debate topics on slips of paper (like 'Cats vs. Dogs'). 3. Mix the slips in the box and take turns picking a topic. 4. Each person prepares for 2 minutes on their stance. 5. Debate for 5 minutes, allowing rebuttals and counterpoints. 6. Reflect on how it felt to speak in front of others and what arguments were most convincing.
