      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using food as a tool for learning allows children to engage their senses and understand fractions in a tangible format. This application of embodied cognition makes the abstract concept of fractions more relatable and easier to comprehend.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 1 large pizza base (or a round flatbread). 2. Use a knife to slice the pizza into 8 equal pieces. 3. Share 3 pieces with family - how many are left? 4. If you eat 2 more pieces, how many pieces are left? 5. Write down the fractions of pizza eaten and remaining. 6. Discuss with your family how you can combine remaining slices to form whole pieces.
